DESCRIPTION:
APW - Waltham, American Watch Co, 19J, Model 1860 with Abbott's stemwind attachment, heavy 18K gold original Baldwin & Co case was originally designed for reversible style (cabriolet) function with pivoting central body allowing orientation in either OF or HC form but this case function has been negated by conversion of watch to stemwinding and case is now functional in HC orientation only, beautifully engine turned and engraved inner hunting lid with 1858 patent date marking, case was originally KWKS style but has been modified with the substitution of a SW style gold-filled replacement pendant, gold cuvette has had its KWKS apertures plugged, white enamel SS dial, mvt was originally finished as KWKS but has been converted to transitional style SW-LS with retained KWKS arbors via an Abbott's stemwind attachment, lever escapement with capped escape wheel, gilt mvt, s#190344. Gross weight of assembled watch 90.1 dwt (140.1 g). CONDITION: Mvt: NR, tension immediately releases upon winding, balance swings freely, overhaul needed...
CONDITION:
Mvt: NR, tension immediately releases upon winding suggesting a likely click or click spring issue, balance swings freely and will tick if crown is prevented from releasing backward while winding, overhaul needed, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, small marring around escape jewel setting, some mild spots and micro-fine scratches to main plate; dial with cluster of hls near 4, two hls at 9:30, small hl above seconds-register; fine hands; case reversible function has been negated by conversion of this watch to stemwinding as the case stem and the mvt setting lever impede the rotation of the central body and as there is no placement for the case stem if OF orientation were attempted, case shows ample wear to its spring loaded hunting lid, light wear to its other side, this disparity in wear indicative that the watch likely saw the majority of its working life in OF form prior to its conversion to stemwinding after which it could only be used in HC form, some dings and mild shallow dents, engine turning detail to rear with mild overall reduction and some loss at shoulder; tight bow, crown shows ample wear; good glass crystal.
